MEGA, is a cloud storage option that has been widely accepted. But, do you know its history? What hurdles did it face? How it originated as well as how it became so popular?
So while the MEGA drive seems to be a promising drive in competition with other popular cloud storages like Drive and Dropbox, it did have its own history and which dates long back.
With the study of MEGA drive, you will not only be able to understand how MEGA emerged as a cloud storage and file sharing option in competitive environment but, will also know about its creator and his history to create what we have today known as MEGA.
Moreover, the research does not simply ends, here or the obstacles that the creator/founder of MEGA faced. But, to keep it short and simple, i have included the important part that you mainly need to understand the uplifting of MEGA.
What is Cloud Storage?
Cloud storage is simply storage that is in some remote location, where you can store all of your data including images, videos, documents, and personal tasks. Cloud storage enables you to access the data from any device and anytime with the ease of a few clicks.
What is MEGA?
MEGA, cloud storage, and file sharing platform offer services that helps day-to-day users to store their valuable data on the internet without paying or by paying very less. MEGA, is well known for its free plan as well as security and encryption. It provides an insane level of encryption, and safety that it has somehow become impossible for copyright owners to claim copyright.
The genius mind behind MEGA is well known as “KIM DOTCOM” also known as the most wanted man on the internet.
Kim Dotcom –
From an early age, Kim was into hacking, and by hacking I mean hacking exchange systems or PBX systems, By the age of 18 he was hacking NASA, Pentagon, and Citi bank some of the well-known national systems of US agencies and banks.
But, as you know life is never easy, he was jailed for a month for selling “Stolen Phone Numbers”, But this was not enough so hacking charges which were committed by Kim during minor were also included. And he served another 2 years. So it is obvious that a convicted person is not going to get a job so, rather he started his own company named Data Protect. So, from here the journey to MEGA starts.
Data Protect –
Data protect started in the mid-90s, as stated in many emails it is still not clear. Data protect provided services to secure the system. As the tweet made by Kim, they had successfully hacked every company which hired them. So, when Data Protect rose from the grounds, it started to make a lot of money, which was eventually at Kim’s disposal. And, then came Megacar.
Mega Car & Massive Profits–
Megacar, Kim has a lot of interest in cars, and with so much money at his disposal, he started a project called megacar. Mega car was an internet-based luxury car. So, this car included a router, video conferencing system, computer, video game, and more importantly a big screen. This seemed fascinating but, the car never came out. And in the 2000s he sold 80% of his data protect shares.
And, later when the popular Dot-com crash was starting, letsbuyit.com was going bankrupt and this is where Kim came forward and help the company by buying its share and announcing that he would be helping the company by raising 50 Million dollars, but like megacar, this also never came. While to this announcement, prices of letsbuyit increased, and Kim made a profit of 1.5 million. But, at the same time, he was convicted of insider trading.
And, after serving his time, he started other firms like Kimpire Ltd, Data protect Ltd, Monkey Ltd, etc... But these didn’t help him at all until Mega Upload.
Mega Upload –
When Kim started the file-sharing business with Mega Upload in 2005, But before this, he legalized everything and maintained his new profile. And, being so advanced at its time, Mega upload gained popularity. But, this is not it. The majority of mega upload users were using it to share cracked software, pirated movies, and copyright software. But, Mega upload started to make money and lots of money. And with this growth, Kim launched other products like MegaPay, MegaPix, MegaVideo, etc.
While both the customers and Kim were happy Copyright holders and the FBI were not. So, they again launched a Kim hunt. While this hunt continued, Mega upload was growing rapidly with revenue worth 175 Million $ and a total of 4% of total internet traffic. And, on Jan 2012 Kim was arrested and Mega upload was shut down. But, wait there is more to the story.
Mega. NZ
After so much going on, the jailing, arresting, and extradition, Kim launched another file sharing and cloud platform named MEGA.nz. It was like rebranding from scratch of Mega Upload. And, this new business started as legal so he made it clear that Mega is for privacy and not piracy.
Conclusion –
As we have looked into the business and ancestors of MEGA, we can see that it faced a lot of cases to survive. And while MEGA.NZ was considered a competitor to Lime torrent, Pirate bay, etc. Kim made it clear that this is for cloud storage and a competitor of Google Drive, One Drive. So, this is how we got our insanely popular and free file-sharing and cloud platform.
