Why is Google’s parent Alphabet? Reason and Site

Google, one of the well-known brands and the biggest tech giant, has a parent? Why is it that the brand that everyone knows is not the parent? Why is every product that Google launched named Google Play Store, Google TV, Google Play, and Google what else? Why not name them under the parent brand Alphabet? What is the reason? There are many questions that one could ask about Google or think that what is Google doing and the reasons behind it. But, you need not worry about all that, because today in this article I have brought all of this together and we will dive deep into Google or can we say Alphabet? Further, we will take a look at the site of Alphabet and discuss that too, because there are some things that you might find odd about Google’s parent.

What is Google?

Google started as a search engine for many web browsers, later developed its browser named Google Chrome, and started to build products surrounding it some of the top performers of Google’s products are – Google Drive, and Google Mail also known as Gmail, Google Maps and Google Play Store. These are not the only ones that have performed well or exceptionally well in the competitive market, but there is a long list of Google products.

It is not like Google has built successful products only, They have also shut down many projects few of them you must know about or have used in the past, are – Google Suit, Google Plus (G+), Hangouts, Google Toolbar, Google Streams, Google Go links, and many more. What is Alphabet?

Alphabet is supposed to be Google’s parent company, it does not have any specific products but it has started to bring all Google’s products together and is working like a holding company for all Google’s products. With a holding company, it has become easier for Google to manage its operations and products.

It was started back in 2016, and back then the co-founder of Google Larry Page, was the CEO of Alphabet whereas, in 2019, he stepped down from the position to promote Sundar Pichai the current CEO of Google as Alphabet – Google’s Parent CEO.

Alphabet comprises Google and other subsidiaries company bought by Google. To date, it comprises around 160 subsidiaries business and has made Alphabet Inc the largest market capitalization company among tech giants.

Where all the products of Google are under either the dot com domain or Google dot com subdomain, their parent company Alphabet is different. Rather than being alphabet dot com or alphabet dot Google dot com, it is abc.xyz

dot xyz domain, which was not considered to be a top-level domain is being used by Google, some of the main reasons behind it are -

abc.com – is owned by American Broadcasting Company

alphabet.com - is owned by BMW

moreover, Google or alphabet also doesn’t own the Twitter handle, @alphabet.

Before announcing abc.xyz which is the alphabets website, it was flagged that Google has also bought the whole alphabet domain registry. Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com was already bought by Google.

Though you may see not resolved now on the above site, it is most likely the defensive play of Google to ensure that no one else buys the domain such as Microsoft or Facebook. Co-Founders explain that the reason behind choosing abc.xyz was that it simply describes everything from abc to xyz. And with this, there is now a high demand for xyz domains.

Why didn’t Google become a parent?

Apart from being traded in the stock market, Google is still the lion's branding which can be seen everywhere. Though it would have been a lot difficult to build a trusted brand or change the company name to Alphabet as Facebook did to Meta.

The word or I may say brand Google has built trust between people, most of the people believe in things because it is by Google, or Google built it. Whereas changing its brand name to Alphabet and renaming products could have destroyed the brand reputation.

Whereas another reason could be there are a lot of applications and web apps that are owned, and up and running on Google, and changing them to Alphabet could have been a lot more difficult. So, rather than going through all that hassle, why not build a new Brand and merge all subsidiaries in it.

Alphabet not only includes Google and Youtube but it has a total of 160 companies in it to date and we can see this number increasing every day.

Some of the subsidiaries under Alphabet are – Google, Youtube, Wing, Chronicle, FitBit, Jigsaw, and Calico.
